What to Expect with TPLO Surgery

We understand that preparing for TPLO surgery can be a big step, so we want to make the process as clear and transparent as possible. Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and informed every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after the surgery.

Before Surgery

Your journey begins with careful planning and preparation:

  • Choosing the Location: With seven convenient Tampa Bay Animal Hospitals locations, you can easily select the one closest to you for your consultation. Visiting one of our locations ensures a thorough and supportive experience from start to finish.
  • Initial Consultation: Meet with one of our Tampa Bay Veterinarians to thoroughly discuss your pet’s condition and the specifics of TPLO surgery. This is your opportunity to ask questions and understand what the procedure entails.
  • Pre-Surgery Instructions: You will receive detailed guidelines on how to prepare your pet for surgery. This includes fasting instructions and information on any medications to administer before the procedure. Proper preparation helps ensure a smooth surgical experience.

Surgery Day

On the day of the procedure, several key steps will be taken to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort:

  • Warm Welcome: Our team will greet you and your pet, helping your beloved pup feel comfortable and settled. We’ll be available to answer any questions you may have and provide support throughout the process.
  • Before Surgery: Dr. Burns is available before the surgery to address any concerns.
  • Anesthesia: Your pet will receive gentle and precisely monitored anesthesia to keep them relaxed and pain-free throughout the surgery. The anesthesia is carefully managed to maintain your pet’s safety.
  • Surgical Procedure: An incision is made to access the knee joint. Dr. Burns will cut and rotate the top of the tibia, then secure it in the correct position with a specialized plate. This adjustment is crucial for stabilizing the knee joint and relieving pain.

After Surgery

The recovery phase is essential for your pet’s healing and return to an active life:

  • Post-Surgery Monitoring: As your pet wakes from anesthesia, they will be closely monitored to ensure they are stable and comfortable. This initial care is vital to address any immediate post-surgical needs.
  • Detailed Care Instructions: You will receive comprehensive instructions on managing pain, restricting activity, and providing home care. Following these guidelines is key to a successful recovery.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: We will coordinate with your primary vet to schedule follow-up visits, focusing on your pet’s rehabilitation and gradual return to their normal activities.
